Subproject 22 - Determination of metals and metalloids in tailings and soil

 

Subproject 22 has the general objective of evaluating the presence, concentration and distribution of metals and metalloids in tailings and soil samples collected in the areas where the BI, B IV, B IVA dams and the tailings spreading zone in the sub-basin were located from the Ferro-Carvão stream, in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais.

This objective is divided into:

  • Characterize 907 tailings and soil samples, sent for analysis by the CTC-UFMG, for the presence and amount of metals and metalloids, based on federal and state standards such as CONAMA 420/2009, DN COPAM/CERH 02/2010, DN COPAM No. 166/2011, ABNT NBR 10.004/2004, ABNT NBR 10.005/2004 and ABNT NBR 10.006/2004 and others;

  • Determine some water-soluble anions, in part of the tailings and soil samples, sent for analysis by the CTC-UFMG;

  • Determine, in part of the samples, rare earth elements, quantifying them by ICP OES or ICP-MS;

  • Determine, in part of the samples, metals and metalloids soluble in water and in leaching extract, quantifying them by ICP OES or ICP-MS;

  • Characterize soil and tailings samples regarding water pH and total carbon, nitrogen and sulfur (CHNS) contents;

  • After the delivery of the partial reports foreseen as one of the products of this Call and the receipt of the georeferencing of the samples, provided by the CTC-UFMG, use graphics and statistical methods to interpret the data obtained, together with the results from other subprojects within the scope of the Brumadinho-UFMG Project, if any;

  • Discuss the results obtained taking into account relevant state and/or federal standards, data and information available on the Brumadinho-UFMG Platform and scientific databases;

  • Carry out proficiency tests with the country's Metrological Networks to certify the quality of tests carried out at CRA;

  • Validate methods, when necessary;

  • Carry out the treatment of data by applying chemometric tools of exploratory analysis and unsupervised classification, PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis), to observe similarities between the samples, variables/elements that most influence the clusters of samples and correlations between measured parameters.

 

Methodological steps

1st Step: Analysis of tailings and soil samples;

2nd Step: Receipt of georeferenced data provided by the CTC-UFMG on the sampling plan and preparation of a complete report including discussion of georeferenced data and comparisons with results of other existing works.
